Mrs. Caroline Coleman   -   Welcome to my Webpage!!!

Welcome to the fourth grade at Ridgemont Elementary!! My name is Ms. Caroline Coleman and I am excited about being your child's reading/language arts teacher!!!

A Little About Me....

I have been teaching at Ridgemont since 1993. I taught the third grade for the first ten years and have gone back and forth from the third to fourth grade since then.  I have lived in Obion County all of my life and there is no place I would rather be.

I attended the former Dixie Elementary school and graduated from Obion County Central in 1988. I received a bachelor's degree from U.T. Martin in December of 1992 and have recently completed my master's degree in Education with an emphasis on elementary reading and mathematics.

I have been married to Scott Coleman for 20 years and have two children. Carly is 16 and she attends O.C.C.H.S., and Miller who is 12 attends Ridgemont. In my spare time, I enjoy being outside, swimming, doing yard work, being with my family and friends, reading, and of course, shopping. I also love to travel and would love to see all of the United States.

I feel blessed to be able to have a career that I love. Even though teaching is challenging and even overwhelming at times, those special moments when a child's eyes light up and they finally "get it" make it all worthwhile. I love each of my students and their unique personalities, and look forward to a wonderful year of fun and learning.

This Year....

During the school year I will be using this website to inform you of upcoming events in the classroom and our school. Please check often for additions and changes!!

Academic Areas of Focus:

Reading
, Language Arts, and Spelling

I will be implementing Balance Literacy into your child’s every day literacy learning experience.   The Obion County School system adopted this approach to Reading and Writing in 2008.  This is a comprehensive system which includes reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and phonics.  Ridgemont Elementary is pleased to have and participate in such an excellent approach to Literacy!!

Reading

Your child will be participating in small guided reading groups along with whole group reading activities.  He/she will also be receiving various home reading assignments over the course of this next school year.  To monitor your child’s reading progress effectively, your child will be assessed by a Diagnostic Reading Inventory every nine week session to identify strengths and weaknesses.   The data will assist us in further planning for your child’s oral reading, fluency, rate, and comprehension strategies in efforts to assist your child with making gains.

Throughout this school year, your child will be receiving various Reading and Writing projects that will be coming home.  Within the first month, you will be receiving an outline and timeline of these Reading and Writing projects.

Spelling
Spelling is an integrated part of the reading program which means that some of the spelling words will appear in what we are reading or writing. A weekly word list will be coming home each Monday.

Please help your child study during the week to prepare for a test given on FRIDAY.

Writing (including Grammar)
Fourth Grade teachers will be requesting your child to write in each subject area.  Your child will be focusing on the Six Traits of Writing (Focus/Ideas, Organization/ Paragraphs, Word Choice, Sentences, and Conventions (Grammar).  Students will be working with compound sentences, compound subject, compound predicates, proper and common nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions.

There will be various projects that will include writing assignments over the course of the year.

Handwriting
Zaner - Blozer hand writing style is what we use.
